Frequently asked questions

Our approach is rooted in quality and integrity. No shortcuts.

1) What can I expect from the visit?

Everyone will be asked to fill out a medical history to start. A series of questions will be asked and once completed you will be asked to walk up and down a hallway to get an understanding of your gait. Next, you will be asked to sit/lie on an examination table to contine the information gathering. Your lower extremities will be placed in different positions and and relevent specific areas will be looked at. Once enough information is obtained an explaination of your concerns and possible solutions will be shared to you, allowing ample time for you to ask questions. Once your questions are addressed and consent is given, your management will likely start during the same visit. If a surgical procedure is required, an apprropiate appointment time will be scheduled.

2) What is the single biggest mistake people make when choosing where to buy their custom-made orthotics?

Most people think the price is the most important factor in deciding where to buy their orthotics. It is impossible to compare one orthotic to another because there are too many factors involved in their making. You will never get the same orthotic from one provider to another. Starting with the person's problem will determine the design of the orthotic. There are hundreds of different combinations of materials and design corrections. It is not like buying glasses in the respect that all lenses are crafted to balance the focal length on the retina. There is a specific prescription that determines the lense. With orthotics, no such metric exists. You are totally dependent on what the provider decides. Furthermore, is the orthotic made from a scan, pressure mat, impression foam box or cast? Next, where is the orthotic made? Is it made in someones basement or an inexpensive lab. Often orthotics are made from catalogues or mirroring meaning they create the orthotic from a catalogue of shapes(closest shape to your foot they have) or just make one orthotic from scratch and then reproduce the other one making it identical to the first one, but just flipping it. Everyone has a different right foot from the left foot. No one is identical with both feet. These are just a few of the many factors. Price is not a good measure.

3) What makes our orthotics special?

Unlike most other clinics, a true plaster of paris cast is taken to create the best orthotic possible. We do not use a foam box, force mat or scanner to get the apparent model of your foot. We capture the identical model of your foot without educated guessing.  Anyone who has experienced an orthotic taken from a plaster of paris cast knows the difference. The registered Chiropdist takes the cast. Not an assistant who is less familiar with the ins and outs. We use the highest top tier lab in Canada. Do not kid yourself, when it comes to orthotics who you choose matters and all providers are not alike. The person taking the cast has decades of experience and quite literally obsesses with each cast and ultimate design of your orthotic.

4) Are your orthotics expensive?

In the Ottawa area, a custom made orthotic from a Chiropodist/Podiatrist runs about $500 plus or minus $50.00. Kanata North Orthotics will price match any licensed Chiropdist/Podiatrist orthotic fee providing the impression is taken with a plaster of paris cast and the quote is in writing on the providers letterhead. The quotes from Pedoritists/Chiropractors or other businesses will not be price matched as Chiropodists/Podiatrists are held to a higher standard for orthotics in Ontario and are the only health professionals in Ontario that have specific orthotic practice guidelines.
